How to make a poncho/jacket

DIY #2

Poncho/jacket

Now that winter is coming and we need to be cozy, it's fun to make our own poncho-jacket made from whichever fabric we prefer. I found a perfect italian fleece fabric in grey  and I loved it!!

Let's start!!

First step, cut a piece of fabric  90X140cm and keep in mind you will need at least 2 cm around for the selvage if you want to change the dimensions (according to me these dimensions are for a one size jacket)

Second step, we make the holes for the sleeves. First you fold the fabric in the middle parallel with the longest side and you draw a line along the edge with chalk like my purple line in the photo

Then as it is, fold it into 3 equals parts, (140- 2 cm for one side's selvage) 138/3= 46cm each. Draw two lines at the points where the fabric is folded as in the photos. The middle part is going to be the back of the jacket and the two others the front part

I hope this purple chalk that I use will wash out!!! Anyway, let's continue with the sleeve holes! Cut 21 cm along the verticle lines from the points that the horizontical line and the vertical lines intersects. this is the arm hole, so if you need more than 21 cm, you can cut further down the verticle lines

Third step, let's start making the sleeves !!!

The sleeve is made from one piece of fabric. When the fabric is flat, draw a line 20 cm long  (although you might want to add a few cm so that you have fabric for selvage). This is the line of the cuffyou can also make it longer if you want the sleeve to be a bit looser. From the mid point of that line extend another line perpendicular 64 cm. This is the length of the shoulder to wrist with added material for the connection point. In this line of 64cm measure down 15cm and draw another line parrallel to the 20cm cuff line. it should be 42cm  (21cm on either side of the line, this is twice the distance from the shoulder to the armpit, and again this is based on a 20 cm cuff, so if you changed the cuff, you should adjust this proportionately.) Now draw straight lines connecting the edges of the parallel lines of 42cm and 20cm (to be more clear follow the pattern below

Then you sew the one side :

And you connect the sleeves to the holes: simply slide the sleeve into the arm hole with the longer edge of the sleeve at the top, and sew it from the inside

I wanted the end of the sleeves to be with a knitted part so I cut the sleeve in the end I did slip stitches around and I sewed the knitted part onto it

And the last step to make the jacket prettier, you can add some tassels and some slip stitches

And here it is ! ! !
